Bell Green, Sydenham

Structural Systems (UK) Ltd has been further developing its relationship with Willmott Dixon by assisting in the design build of the £16.4 million contract at Bell Green, Sydenham.  The scheme will provide 156 new apartments and commercial space. The housing which has just been completed includes 85 homes for social rent and 71 for shared ownership.

This scheme is Phase Two of a multi-phase redevelopment programme on the former Bell Green gas works site that will be transformed into a retail park with adjacent new homes, businesses and employment within Lewisham.

This scheme is a government initiative that allows tenants to rent a property for a predefined period of time before purchasing it once the tenancy ends.

Originally designed to be constructed using a traditional concrete frame, Structural Systems (UK) Ltd worked closely with the frame contractor, main contractor and structural engineer to develop a post tensioned solution that provided significant cost benefits to the client.  The building itself, boasts a unique ‘seashell’ circular design and features an external brick-block facade with a rendered finish.

The north block is a four-storey structure that comprises two commercial units on the ground floor and twenty flats on the three storeys above. The remaining 136 units are contained within the four-storey south block.  The scheme totalled just under 16,000m2 of post tensioned slab

The scheme will provide London with much-needed affordable accommodation in a location that is currently undergoing radical redevelopment.
